I was recommended this lotion by a friend and I see you have it as one of your top picks… can anyone else help me out and share their experiences with Luminary?
March 15th, 2010 at 11:25 am
I was lucky enough to get three sample packets of Luminary and it is really amazing! The bronzer is perfect, the scent is light, and it is a rich, thick lotion that goes a long way. I didn’t have any problem with it clogging my pores or having any streaks. The Salon wanted $110/bottle which is crazy – buy it somewhere online for 1/3rd of that price!! I’m currently using Phoenician which is just wonderful too but without the bronzer. I would say you can’t go wrong with Luminary.

i work at a tanning salon and we just got this in and yes, it is VERY expensive, but worth it! we are required to try all new lotions we get in so i tried this and got so dark so fast! just be super super careful with it on your face and make sure when you apply it your doing it in a circular motion so you dont streak! the scent is nice but you smell like a tanning bed after. also, dont use it CONSTANTLY otherwise you could turn orange because it has so many bronzers in it!!
April 2nd, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Does it have a tingle factor?
April 9th, 2010 at 7:04 am
No, there is no tingle in Luminary. It does have a wonderful light scent, although I don’t feel it is the best at immediate bronzing. It does make my skin feel extremely soft and supple. I would never pay the $125.00 that my salon charges. Bought it online for $40 and change. I am looking to try something else with a more immediate (but not orange) bronzing factor.
April 14th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
I just received luminary in the mail today I bought it for 40$ when the tanning salon I go to wanted it for 100$. The smell is wonderful & the lotion isnt think and heavy feeling like most lotions. In one use I have seen a difference and my skin was left silky & not dried out like most lotions after you tan. I 100% recommend this lotion!! Just look on ebay first dont spend 100$ or more at the salon. (:
April 21st, 2010 at 10:25 pm
I got Luminary the other day and have only used it once. I was wondering if I have to wait a certain amount of time after I tan for the bronzer to set in before I shower.
April 22nd, 2010 at 8:16 am
I think usually it is recommended to wait at least 2 to 4 hours before showering after using a bronzer lotion.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am
it’s the best lotion ive ever used the first time i used it i got 3 shades darker and so on every time after that it didnt take long to reach my desired tan only 5 tanning sessions i was hooked from the first timethe bronzer doesnt whipe off or come off in the bed and it has a really good smell that last all day it cost a little more but worth every cent in long run all who read this if they havent already should try it i swear you will love it its amazing
May 4th, 2010 at 9:16 am
I ABSOULUTLY LOVE THIS LOTION. not only does it smell amazing but it makes almost two shades darker with each tanning session. the 25 times bronzer works really well and i get an even tan throughout my body. it also leaves my skin feeling nice and smooth after tanning. Most tanning lotions dry out my skin or make me burn really bad. but this ones great.
May 7th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Does anyone agree that this lotion smells a little bit like flowers?
May 9th, 2010 at 9:21 am
Hi again! Still wondering if anyone has purchased Luminary and thought it smelled like flowers? also Does anyone trust buying indoor tanning lotios from ebay or amazon? I herd from my tanning salon that people are popping the lids off and replacing lotios with other lotion that you bought. Thats why I am wondering about the scent of Luminary. I wanted to purchase a bottle of Black 20X from ebay but am now a little afraid to. I surely do not want to pay $101.00 from my salon! Please help!
May 9th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Hi Tina!
Buying on ebay is safe, if you want to know why check out this page: http://www.snizzap.com/where-to-buy
Happy tanning!
June 18th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
I bought this lotion at my local salon about a month ago. I LOVE it. I woul dbuy it agasin, but I heard you should switch the lotions you use and not repeat with the same one. IS that true???
June 24th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
And as far as Luminary goes.. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It is like lotion in a bottle. And personally I must disagree as a tanning salon employee.. I didnt streak and tan with nothing but the Luminary. I only use it about once a week and haven’t turned orange at all. : )
July 10th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
I smelled this and it didn’t smell that good. It smelled like perfume :/
July 15th, 2010 at 3:29 pm
I just bought Luminary and it is AMAZING. I can already tell a difference in just one tanning session. It does have a light flower smell, but not too overbearing. It made my skin very soft and it did not streak or make me turn orange.
July 20th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
I got a $6.50 sample at the tanning salon and when I used it, I loved the smell. I wouldn’t go with flowers but sort of men’s sweet cologne. But the salon I go to charges $125. I pretty much laughed in their face and knew I could find it cheaper online. I just bought it outright for $39.00. Great smell and extremely excited to see my new color!! DON’T buy it at the store, buy it on ebay, and ensure you only buy from someone who has high reviews!!
August 13th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
I really like luminary. I use it along with designer skin’s black 20x. I also use swedish beauty pink diamond once every two or three weeks to give my tan a little boost (tingle). Of the three I like luminary the best for the color it gives… never had any streaking issues. I don’t particularly care for perfume type smells so that’s the only draw back for me… but not enough to stop using it
Black 20x smells better but does streak a bit if I use it day after day…especially notice it on my feet. But it provides a really nice color.
September 10th, 2010 at 8:50 pm
Ok… so it’s official I’m in love with this lotion! I purchased this lotion today at tanning salon price which was very expensive, but worth every penny! I walked into the salon and asked what was there BEST lotion, she handed me this beautiful shinny bottle and already I was sold. After applying Luminary and tanning for 7 minutes in my salons beginner beds, I noticed a few shades difference… hours after; I noticed a tan that should have taken at least 5 sessions. This lotion is amazing, and definitely a great purchase that I don’t regret.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Is Luminary, Smoke, or Black 20X better? I have heard good things about all of them?
October 3rd, 2010 at 8:53 pm
I would say Luminary & Black 20X are the best, and they are very similar aside from the scent. Smoke Black is also a great bronzer lotion that’s fairly inexpensive. You generally get what you pay for with tanning lotions, so if you want the absolute best go with Designer Skin.
November 3rd, 2010 at 8:55 pm
ok I am looking into buying Luminary but first I need to know is it going to turn me orange with everyday use?? I go to the tanning bed atleast 4 times a week and I don’t need to be turning into a pumpkin
November 4th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
Rachel it definitely will NOT turn you orange!
November 6th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
So I have purchased a bottle of Luminary off ebay for $40 bucks… and naturally I am fairly light skinned, but I tan very well… I usually reach a peek after going to the tanning bed about 20 times, and I can no longer get any darker just keep my tan… so i purchased this in desperation for a deeper darker tan and I was none the less amazed… i noticed I darkened at least two shades… this product is truly amazing… and I would recommend it to anyone… it is pricey at my local sun tan city salon, so try getting it online…
February 4th, 2011 at 3:22 pm
I have very fair skin, but can hold a tan. It usually takes me hours at the beach and or a month of going to the tanning bed three days a week to get that amazing glow. I have used luminary only twice and have noticed a huge difference. I am at least a shade darker, and it looks very natural, not orange like the cast of jersey shore! It goes on so smooth and makes my skin feel great. The scent is subtle at first, kinda reminds me of Victoria’s Secret strawberries and champagne, but as you tan instead of getting that gross after tan odor that those “pina colada” tanning lotions give you, you get this perfume-y smell. I can go places after I tan, I have had friends ask me what perfume I use!! I wouldn’t recommend showering right after you tan while using this though, the longer you wait, the darker you get!! I purchased mine on ebay for around $35.00… yes the price is very steep at the tanning salons. Enjoy!! You won’t be disappointed!
April 11th, 2011 at 7:48 pm
i love this too and i bought 15 sample packets on ebay for $30.00. i like buying them in sample packets because that way i can make each sample pack stretch. i tan fairly easy once i get going after winter months. i had a bottle of spellbound that had almost the same smell and loved it but then bought this and loved it even more. i just tend to use too much when i buy them in the bottle. so to save some $ and lotion i buy a quantity of the sample packs on ebay which works great for me since your really not suppose to drown yourself in the lotion anyways. lol. and then i use hempz herbal moisturizer to help keep my tan longer which works great and is also cheap on ebay. hope this helps.
April 11th, 2011 at 7:54 pm
oh and i got a free sample of the “risque” when i ordered from ebay and used that when i ran out of luminary and wow….that was awesome too. it is a tingle and im not much for the tingle but i really did like it. it wasnt too bad and i got immediate results. i think it just gave it a boost. iv done plenty of research on tanning lotions and hadnt heard much about that but i really like it too. but like i mentioned, i had already had a good basse tan with using the luminary.
April 14th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
is this ok to use on your face too? My boyfriend has been telling me how beautiful i would look tan but i dont have enough free time to actually lay out but i dont want to turn orange like i did before
April 15th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Yes! Almost all lotions are OK to use on your face. If they are not ok, it will blatantly say so. Designer Skin happens to actually make a version of Luminary specifically for your face – if you type “luminary face” into our search box you will find the best prices. Happy tanning!
May 6th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
hey,
anyone who used this, how often do you use it? i assume it has a tan booster in it or something…. are you SURE it doesn’t turn you orange? because i hate tan boosters but i love everything else about this product. Thanks ! (:
May 24th, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Do you have to use a tanning bed for this? Or can you just use the sun?
May 24th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
It is highly recommended to only use lotions like this one in tanning beds. This lotion doesn’t contain any SPF protection and its formula of various tan accelerators can cause your skin to burn when exposed to too much sun.
June 24th, 2011 at 12:49 am
hi, i am just wondering how you would apply this product? is less more or should you cover your whole body for even results?
June 24th, 2011 at 2:11 am
Hi Rebecca – Generally you want to cover your whole body with a thin layer of lotion. Gently rub it in and after your first few sessions you’ll be able to figure out how much more you can apply. Experiment with different amounts to find what works best for you, but to play it safe start out with a thin layer and work your way up.
With a bronzer lotion like this one you want to wash your hands immediately after your tanning bed session, but wait a few hours before showering to maximize the browning effect from the lotion.
June 27th, 2011 at 5:37 pm
Love this lotion! I’ve tried many different lotions and this has to be the best so far! I’ve only tanned for two sessions and I’m already a few shades darker! I also love the silky feeling it leaves my skin. I’ve been wondering lately though if Obsidian is even better. I haven’t tried it yet so I’m not sure.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:07 pm
@ Brittany you should deff try Obsidian! It is amazing! I just started to use it bout I am getting amazing results! And I think I have finally found the one I will always use!
June 30th, 2011 at 3:17 am
What else can I say but THIS LOTION IS AWESOME!! LOVE IT! It goes on your skin really smooth, has a great scent, no yucky after tan smell, and the tanning results are great too! Well worth the money!
June 30th, 2011 at 8:27 am
This lotion is truly amazing!! The bronzers work wonders and you will see a difference within two sessions. Also the moisturizers really do leave your skin glowing!! A+++
July 1st, 2011 at 1:12 pm
This is the best tanning lotion ever. Although it is an indoor tanning lotion i use it outside sometimes too and it works wonders. I don’t tan very easily because i have fair skin and this lotion boots my tanning process 100%. I love it! A++++
July 3rd, 2011 at 4:57 pm
i just got thru using my big bottle of moda by devoted creations but now that i am on mylast amount of use i would love to try a sample of this luminary.because i will now have buy another bottle of some kind.thank you very much for this offer!
July 5th, 2011 at 12:08 pm
I am looking for a new lotion for my daughter. She just finished using Ed Hardy Body Shots and really liked it but wants something better. Is it possible to get a sample of Luminary?
July 5th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Hey Patricia – I’m working on possibly getting some Luminary samples, but currently in stock I have the Supre lotions listed on our free lotion page.
Luminary is definitely top-notch if that’s what you’re looking for, and I’ve yet to meet anyone who didn’t like it. Thanks for commenting!
July 6th, 2011 at 12:57 am
I want to try this lotion sooooo bad! i hate feeling so stinky after i tan and i heard that this lotion has a powder type feeing after you use it. I want to order it so bad but i hate buying things off of EBAY…:( i think i will give it a shot tho!
`thanks for the free sample! cant wait to recieve it!
July 7th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
This lotion is suppose to be really good and I have always wanted to try it but I am afraid to buy a whole bottle and me not like it!
July 7th, 2011 at 7:55 pm
I have heard a lot about this lotion and I am really excited to try it and see how it works. I have used other lotions made by Designer Skin and I am very happy with their products.
July 8th, 2011 at 12:39 am
i would love to try this i hear it’s really good i look forward to trying it out
July 8th, 2011 at 1:30 am
4 out of 5 stars vote from me! I love what this lotion has done for the color of my skin! I am a pale person and needed to get tan quick. I had tried some other lotions (cheeper lotions by designer skin and some from other brands) but I was having a hard time getting tan. I sampled this at the tanning salon and loved it!! I noticed a difference after one use and went home and bought a bottle after the second use. The reason I give this lotion a 4 star rating and not 5 is because the smell is VERY strong and I like more mild smelling lotions. After I tan I feel like ppl can smell me from a mile away so I have to go take a quick shower.
July 8th, 2011 at 7:52 am
I have not tried tanning lotions in the past. I am excited to get your free sample to do so. If I like your product you can count on me making purchases through your company in the future. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to try something before making the financial decision to purchase it.
July 10th, 2011 at 11:55 am
I have this lotion and I love it. It leaves your skin feeling SO soft after your tanning session! My legs seem to take longer to get color though; any suggestions? (This happens also when I’m out in the sun)
July 27th, 2011 at 10:32 am
I had this lotion last year and didn’t like it at all! If you want a great lotion that gives you great color, try Ed Hardy Body Shots! It is an extreme tingle, but the color you get is amazing!
July 27th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
hi, i was just wondering does this lotion work the same as if you put it on then tan outside? or is it safe to use outside? i mean, if i put it on then go lay out what will happen or be my results? and also, if you spray tan at the salon, can this product be used? i try and stay away from tanning beds.
July 28th, 2011 at 9:19 am
Hi Layla – Many people have tried using indoor lotions outside and achieved good results, but there’s a few things to keep in mind. This lotion does NOT contain any SPF at all, and in fact contains tan accelerators that speed up the tanning process under UV exposure. This is great when you’re in a tanning bed, since you can get a nice glow in a short amount of time, but outside this can be dangerous because you tend to spend more time out in the sun and your skin is not protected. If you want to try and use this lotion outside I highly recommend only being in direct sunlight for very short periods of time, until you really see how it effects you. A better alternative when tanning outdoors would be an outdoor bronzer lotion with a little SPF. Australian Gold makes a great line of spray bronzers specifically for outdoor use that will get you dark and also provide more protection than a lotion like this would. As far as a spray tan you would not use a product like this. We have an article about spray tanning that covers how the process works and how you prepare for a session. Thanks for the question!
July 28th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
That is an interesting take on using indoor lotion outside. However, I have to disagree with one part of your response. Luminary would be a great product for a spray tanning client to use for post spray maintenance. Your skin can get a little dry post spray tan and I always suggest a good moisturizer with bronzers and self tanners. Luminary has it all and is fabulous for your skin. If you can afford to use Luminary in this fashion, it would do wonders for your skin and color.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:15 pm
KaraM, many women have trouble tanning their legs…you are not alone! I usually suggest a tingle lotion or blush for this. If you’ve never used one, they can seem a little intense. As the name implies, it makes your skin literally tingle (it feels a bit like a sunburn). As disturbing as that sounds, it’s actually quite good for your skin. Sometimes I describe it as a sunburn false alarm…meaning, your body responds to tingle lotions much like it would to a sunburn. The chemical is benzyl nicotinate which increases microcirculation, thus oxygenating the skin and triggering your body to start producing everything it needs to protect itself from a sunburn (i.e. at tan). Poor circulation, especially in your legs is very common, but as I have explained, this is a problem that can be addressed/corrected in terms of tanning them. If all of that seems too intense, there are plenty of great bronzers out there, like California Tan’s Leg Perfector.
July 30th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
Not a fan! tanned with it for 3 weeks didn’t feel any tanner if anything my chest also got white! Love Black x20!
July 31st, 2011 at 2:03 am
my race is white, but i am not pale white. i’m darker then most “white people” but if for prom, i want to look beachy tan, what would be the best option? spray tan then using a lotion? any advice?
August 6th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
Chrissy: Thank you! I will be sure to try a tingle lotion next for sure! Jessica: I went and got a spray tan done (by a person, not machine) 3 days before my wedding and it looked really natural. I choose spray tans before special events just so I get the all over color quicker. If you choose to go the spray tan route, research around you to see who offers the most natural look (i.e. Mystic Tan booths are too orange in my opinion, Versa Spa machines work well if done a couple days before. If you can get a woman to coat you down that might work best. You can always wear bikini bottoms and a strapless bra/bikini top so it’s not awkward.)
September 1st, 2011 at 12:28 am
is there any way for me to try this before i buy it? ive heard great reviews on this and obsidian and ive been dying to try them both but hate to spend all of that money and then it end up not working for me. thanks so much!!
September 16th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
sara – go to a tanning salon, they usually have samples packets of lotion for like 10 bucks!!
jessica – if you have plenty of time before prom you can use any lotion that has bronzers in it or if your an experienced tanner tingle is another really good option!! if you wanted to spray tan, tan in the tanning bed firs t to open up your pores then spray tan after..keep in mind spray tans only last about a week!
September 18th, 2011 at 9:24 pm
Is there anyone who absolutely loves this lotion and thinks it works because it says #1 lotion but I’m seeing way more bad reviews than good haha.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:55 pm
work at a tanning salon this is the best lotion out there cant get any more bronze in a lotion
December 6th, 2011 at 11:54 am
I’ve been using this tanning lotion for awhile on and off now. And its great, I’ve never turned orange or have been streaky. You get darker right after the first use, I would recommend it to everyone. I got a steal for mine paying around $25 and it has lasted me awhile. But its a great product
December 29th, 2011 at 4:47 pm
If it gets you 2-3 shades darker- How the heck can you get it on your back evenly without having tan lines where you missed?
I tan quite often & am debating buying this one now online…
December 30th, 2011 at 5:22 pm
I’ve seen some lotion/cream applicators that make it easier to apply to your back, but I don’t think I’ve seen them at salons.
Type in “back lotion applicator” in our search box at the top of the page and you’ll see what I’m referring to.
Luminary is a really good lotion and has been a best-seller for a long time, I’m sure you’ll love it.
January 22nd, 2012 at 7:49 pm
I’ve been obsessed with getting this lotion since June! I finally got it not too long ago and im honestly really dissapointed =( everyone i guess is different but i am most definatly not as dark as everyone is raving about.. im about a medium color that comes after pale. i liked black by jwoww and ill think ill stick to that one
