Designer Skin Luminary

Luminary Tanning Lotion Luminary 25X Bronzer is part of the Black Label Private Reserve collection from Designer Skin and is considered a dark tanning lotion. It is currently our #1 overall recommendation for the best lotion because it has been a consistent best-seller for well over a year now and it has a very high number and ratio of positive reviews.

The inspiration for Designer Skin to create Luminary came from the success of Black 20X and Phoenician, two of their other best-selling lotions. They wanted to create the ultimate bronzer and accelerator in one formula, and they succeeded.

Luminary enables skin to reach its max bronzing levels and gives you that super dark tan you’ve been looking for. Magic Solar Silicone Emulsion has been blended into this super exotic tanning bed lotion to hydrate your skin while maintaining its perfect color. Revolutionary L.E.D (Light Engaged Defiance) Complex takes charge and runs the show by controlling free radicals and warding off their aggressors. L.E.D Complex truly is revolutionary when it comes to tanning and maintaining skin health. Soft Celestial Stardust is in charge of making sure skin achieves ideal dimensions and even color. This unique feature also makes sure that you don’t leave your tanning session without achieving that luxurious island glow. Skin will look and feel magnificent after your Luminary experience.

Luminary comes in a very sparkly blue bottle. DS says it has a Sweet Champagne Fizz scent, but most people say it smells like flowers or perfume (a very pleasant scent, even after your session). It comes in a 13.5 oz bottle which can sell for up to $120.00 at high-end salons.

Actually never heard of this lotion…but would love to try it from seen the last couple reviews. I work at a tanning salon, but we don’t carry this one :( we do however carry a ton of designer skin products! Lately
I’ve been switching it up every three weeks. From Modern Bombshell (which is a tingler) to California Tans X power.

Do you reccommend buying the face tanner as well? Or can I just use the regular luminary lotion on my face and get the same results?

Luminary Love it ( just be careful when you buy it on line, there are alot of fake lotion…with the same name ) anyway….there are lotion of the month time and always look for deals in the salon.AG Hardcore Black is also a great lotion..always get a packet first and try different ones.

Hey Alex, Luminary doesn’t have hemp seed oil in it but it has various other oils and extracts from plant leaves, bark and seeds.

I had one month to my best friends wedding and I was looking pretty pale. I spent all afternoon researching lotions. Nothing but great reviews for luminary. I decided okay why not give it a shot. I must urge you all to buy online (salons are outrageously priced). After my first visit in a premium stand up bed within hours I noticed a significant change in my skin color. Normally Im hard at establishing a base tan but within one week I was as dark as it would take me all summer using a average lotion. I continued on a basis of 5 times a week and by time the wedding day everyone had asked me how long did it take me to get as dark as I was. When i told them exactly one month they were shocked no one had believed me that this lotion was that effective. I had half of a bottle left, I gave it to one of my friends to try herself and she could not believe how fast she established her tan as well. Its the best lotion I have ever used and I will continue to only use this lotion. Not only is it effective in tanning, but as a perfume as well. It has an amazing fresh flower smell. It last all day long to, I can almost smell it the next morning when I wake up. The lotion has a slight shimmer to it too so it looks amazing when your out in the sun and your body is just glowing. The bottle it comes in is so appealing to any woman. A blue sparkly bottle i fell in love with it the moment I seen it. I would highly recommend this to anybody trying to tan in a short amount of time.

I just bought a bottle of Luminary for your body and one for your face for $60. I’m extremely excited to use it! I’ve never really herd of it before because my tanning salon doesn’t carry it but I saw it on pintrest and decided to try it!!!!

I just got this lotion in the mail today…after reading so many great reviews, I was excited. However, after using it I’m a little disappointed…it smells amazing but I didn’t see a huge difference in color…it did also make my skin smooth, which seemed to increase the longer I kept it on. It even has a beautiful hint of sparkle. But, the thing that bothers me about this lotion is that it gives my skin a strange itchy or irritating feeling…like I got insulation on me…I have experienced a similar feeling with bare minerals makeup and had to switch to pur minerals…I’m wondering if its the mica? Or something else? Prior to using this I was using AG Hardcore Black, which to be a cheaper lotion was fabulous, and made my skin feel great…anyone else having these issues?

I work at a high end tanning salon and this is our #1 recommended product. I use this lotion as well and have had amazing results. It leaves my skin soft and silky smooth. It’s very light and feels great on your skin. I personally do not think it has a floral scent, but don’t really know how to describe it honestly. As with every bronzer you’ll want to wipe off your hands after every use just to be sure to not leave any marks. OH! and this lotion won’t leave u with that “after sun” smell, it’ll smell great before and after you tan! I hope this may help anyone that wants to use this!!

Hey Emily – You shouldn’t… this lotion uses very high quality bronzers and very very few people have ever complained of it making them orange.

    March 4th, 2012 at 4:22 pm

Luminary has a great smell before and after. I used it in a tanning bed and I really liked it. However I don’t recommend the silicone lotions to people with dry skin contrary to belief. It just sits on the skin and rolls off later. Using this in an all bronzing bed or a standard bed give the best results.

I’ve seen some lotion/cream applicators that make it easier to apply to your back, but I don’t think I’ve seen them at salons.

Type in “back lotion applicator” in our search box at the top of the page and you’ll see what I’m referring to.

Luminary is a really good lotion and has been a best-seller for a long time, I’m sure you’ll love it.

If it gets you 2-3 shades darker- How the heck can you get it on your back evenly without having tan lines where you missed? :( I tan quite often & am debating buying this one now online…

I’ve been using this tanning lotion for awhile on and off now. And its great, I’ve never turned orange or have been streaky. You get darker right after the first use, I would recommend it to everyone. I got a steal for mine paying around $25 and it has lasted me awhile. But its a great product

    September 16th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

sara – go to a tanning salon, they usually have samples packets of lotion for like 10 bucks!!

jessica – if you have plenty of time before prom you can use any lotion that has bronzers in it or if your an experienced tanner tingle is another really good option!! if you wanted to spray tan, tan in the tanning bed firs t to open up your pores then spray tan after..keep in mind spray tans only last about a week!

is there any way for me to try this before i buy it? ive heard great reviews on this and obsidian and ive been dying to try them both but hate to spend all of that money and then it end up not working for me. thanks so much!!

  25. Kara M.
    August 6th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Chrissy: Thank you! I will be sure to try a tingle lotion next for sure! Jessica: I went and got a spray tan done (by a person, not machine) 3 days before my wedding and it looked really natural. I choose spray tans before special events just so I get the all over color quicker. If you choose to go the spray tan route, research around you to see who offers the most natural look (i.e. Mystic Tan booths are too orange in my opinion, Versa Spa machines work well if done a couple days before. If you can get a woman to coat you down that might work best. You can always wear bikini bottoms and a strapless bra/bikini top so it’s not awkward.)

    July 28th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

KaraM, many women have trouble tanning their legs…you are not alone! I usually suggest a tingle lotion or blush for this. If you’ve never used one, they can seem a little intense. As the name implies, it makes your skin literally tingle (it feels a bit like a sunburn). As disturbing as that sounds, it’s actually quite good for your skin. Sometimes I describe it as a sunburn false alarm…meaning, your body responds to tingle lotions much like it would to a sunburn. The chemical is benzyl nicotinate which increases microcirculation, thus oxygenating the skin and triggering your body to start producing everything it needs to protect itself from a sunburn (i.e. at tan). Poor circulation, especially in your legs is very common, but as I have explained, this is a problem that can be addressed/corrected in terms of tanning them. If all of that seems too intense, there are plenty of great bronzers out there, like California Tan’s Leg Perfector.

    July 28th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

That is an interesting take on using indoor lotion outside. However, I have to disagree with one part of your response. Luminary would be a great product for a spray tanning client to use for post spray maintenance. Your skin can get a little dry post spray tan and I always suggest a good moisturizer with bronzers and self tanners. Luminary has it all and is fabulous for your skin. If you can afford to use Luminary in this fashion, it would do wonders for your skin and color.

    July 28th, 2011 at 9:19 am

Hi Layla – Many people have tried using indoor lotions outside and achieved good results, but there’s a few things to keep in mind. This lotion does NOT contain any SPF at all, and in fact contains tan accelerators that speed up the tanning process under UV exposure. This is great when you’re in a tanning bed, since you can get a nice glow in a short amount of time, but outside this can be dangerous because you tend to spend more time out in the sun and your skin is not protected. If you want to try and use this lotion outside I highly recommend only being in direct sunlight for very short periods of time, until you really see how it effects you. A better alternative when tanning outdoors would be an outdoor bronzer lotion with a little SPF. Australian Gold makes a great line of spray bronzers specifically for outdoor use that will get you dark and also provide more protection than a lotion like this would. As far as a spray tan you would not use a product like this. We have an article about spray tanning that covers how the process works and how you prepare for a session. Thanks for the question!

hi, i was just wondering does this lotion work the same as if you put it on then tan outside? or is it safe to use outside? i mean, if i put it on then go lay out what will happen or be my results? and also, if you spray tan at the salon, can this product be used? i try and stay away from tanning beds.

4 out of 5 stars vote from me! I love what this lotion has done for the color of my skin! I am a pale person and needed to get tan quick. I had tried some other lotions (cheeper lotions by designer skin and some from other brands) but I was having a hard time getting tan. I sampled this at the tanning salon and loved it!! I noticed a difference after one use and went home and bought a bottle after the second use. The reason I give this lotion a 4 star rating and not 5 is because the smell is VERY strong and I like more mild smelling lotions. After I tan I feel like ppl can smell me from a mile away so I have to go take a quick shower.

I also love the silky feeling it leaves my skin. I’ve been wondering lately though if Obsidian is even better. I haven’t tried it yet so I’m not sure.

    June 24th, 2011 at 2:11 am

Hi Rebecca – Generally you want to cover your whole body with a thin layer of lotion. Gently rub it in and after your first few sessions you’ll be able to figure out how much more you can apply. Experiment with different amounts to find what works best for you, but to play it safe start out with a thin layer and work your way up.

With a bronzer lotion like this one you want to wash your hands immediately after your tanning bed session, but wait a few hours before showering to maximize the browning effect from the lotion.

  49. rebecca
    June 24th, 2011 at 12:49 am

hi, i am just wondering how you would apply this product? is less more or should you cover your whole body for even results?

  50. Jess
    May 24th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

It is highly recommended to only use lotions like this one in tanning beds. This lotion doesn’t contain any SPF protection and its formula of various tan accelerators can cause your skin to burn when exposed to too much sun.

  51. Have to use a tanning bed?

Yes! Almost all lotions are OK to use on your face. If they are not ok, it will blatantly say so. Designer Skin happens to actually make a version of Luminary specifically for your face – if you type “luminary face” into our search box you will find the best prices. Happy tanning!

    April 11th, 2011 at 7:54 pm

oh and i got a free sample of the “risque” and used that when i ran out of luminary and wow….that was awesome too. it is a tingle and im not much for the tingle but i really did like it. it wasnt too bad and i got immediate results. i think it just gave it a boost. iv done plenty of research on tanning lotions and hadnt heard much about that but i really like it too. but like i mentioned, i had already had a good basse tan with using the luminary.

  56. Anonymous
    April 11th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

i love this too. i like buying them in sample packets because that way i can make each sample pack stretch. i tan fairly easy once i get going after winter months. i had a bottle of spellbound that had almost the same smell and loved it but then bought this and loved it even more. i just tend to use too much when i buy them in the bottle. so to save some $ and lotion i buy a quantity of the sample packs which works great for me since your really not suppose to drown yourself in the lotion anyways. lol. and then i use hempz herbal moisturizer to help keep my tan longer which works great. hope this helps.

I have very fair skin, but can hold a tan. It usually takes me hours at the beach and or a month of going to the tanning bed three days a week to get that amazing glow. I have used luminary only twice and have noticed a huge difference. I am at least a shade darker, and it looks very natural, not orange like the cast of jersey shore! It goes on so smooth and makes my skin feel great. The scent is subtle at first, kinda reminds me of Victoria’s Secret strawberries and champagne, but as you tan instead of getting that gross after tan odor that those “pina colada” tanning lotions give you, you get this perfume-y smell. I can go places after I tan, I have had friends ask me what perfume I use!! I wouldn’t recommend showering right after you tan while using this though, the longer you wait, the darker you get!! Enjoy!! You won’t be disappointed!

  58. Sonya
    November 6th, 2010 at 8:57 pm

naturally I am fairly light skinned, but I tan very well… I usually reach a peek after going to the tanning bed about 20 times, and I can no longer get any darker just keep my tan… so i purchased this in desperation for a deeper darker tan and I was none the less amazed… i noticed I darkened at least two shades… this product is truly amazing… and I would recommend it to anyone…

I would say Luminary & Black 20X are the best, and they are very similar aside from the scent. Smoke Black is also a great bronzer lotion that’s fairly inexpensive. You generally get what you pay for with tanning lotions, so if you want the absolute best go with Designer Skin.

  62. sara

    September 10th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Ok… so it’s official I’m in love with this lotion! I purchased this lotion today at tanning salon price which was very expensive, but worth every penny! I walked into the salon and asked what was there BEST lotion, she handed me this beautiful shinny bottle and already I was sold. After applying Luminary and tanning for 7 minutes in my salons beginner beds, I noticed a few shades difference… hours after; I noticed a tan that should have taken at least 5 sessions. This lotion is amazing, and definitely a great purchase that I don’t regret.

I really like luminary. I use it along with designer skin’s black 20x. I also use swedish beauty pink diamond once every two or three weeks to give my tan a little boost (tingle). Of the three I like luminary the best for the color it gives… never had any streaking issues. I don’t particularly care for perfume type smells so that’s the only draw back for me… but not enough to stop using it :) Black 20x smells better but does streak a bit if I use it day after day…especially notice it on my feet. But it provides a really nice color.

I just bought Luminary and it is AMAZING. I can already tell a difference in just one tanning session. It does have a light flower smell, but not too overbearing. It made my skin very soft and it did not streak or make me turn orange.

I ABSOULUTLY LOVE THIS LOTION. not only does it smell amazing but it makes almost two shades darker with each tanning session. the 25 times bronzer works really well and i get an even tan throughout my body. it also leaves my skin feeling nice and smooth after tanning. Most tanning lotions dry out my skin or make me burn really bad. but this ones great.

I think usually it is recommended to wait at least 2 to 4 hours before showering after using a bronzer lotion.

I got Luminary the other day and have only used it once. I was wondering if I have to wait a certain amount of time after I tan for the bronzer to set in before I shower.

The smell is wonderful & the lotion isnt think and heavy feeling like most lotions. In one use I have seen a difference and my skin was left silky & not dried out like most lotions after you tan. I 100% recommend this lotion!!

No, there is no tingle in Luminary. It does have a wonderful light scent, although I don’t feel it is the best at immediate bronzing. It does make my skin feel extremely soft and supple. I would never pay the $125.00 that my salon charges. Bought it online for $40 and change. I am looking to try something else with a more immediate (but not orange) bronzing factor.

Does it have a tingle factor?

i work at a tanning salon and we just got this in and yes, it is VERY expensive, but worth it! we are required to try all new lotions we get in so i tried this and got so dark so fast! just be super super careful with it on your face and make sure when you apply it your doing it in a circular motion so you dont streak! the scent is nice but you smell like a tanning bed after. also, dont use it CONSTANTLY otherwise you could turn orange because it has so many bronzers in it!!

I was lucky enough to get three sample packets of Luminary and it is really amazing! The bronzer is perfect, the scent is light, and it is a rich, thick lotion that goes a long way. I didn’t have any problem with it clogging my pores or having any streaks. The Salon wanted $110/bottle which is crazy – buy it somewhere online for 1/3rd of that price!! I’m currently using Phoenician which is just wonderful too but without the bronzer. I would say you can’t go wrong with Luminary.

I was recommended this lotion by a friend and I see you have it as one of your top picks… can anyone else help me out and share their experiences with Luminary?
